The Urban League of Greater Hartford, Inc. is an affiliate of the National Urban League. Founded in 1964 by Rachel Milton, Marion Hepburn Grant, Dr. James S. Peters II, Judge Norris O'Neill and Olcott Smith, the Urban League is a community based not-for-profit. It is one of the largest direct social services agencies in New England. The Urban League provides services in the areas of Education, Employment and Training, and Economic Enrichment.

Financial Literacy

390 people increased their knowledge of money management
51% of the people who participated in our program established credit or improved their credit score

Tax Preparation

181 tax returns completed
Average income - $21,000.00
Average tax return - $2,043.00
Average preparation time - 45 minutes

Home Ownership

224 homes purchased
Average cost - $160,000
Total value of real estate transactions - over $35,000,000

Foreclosure

Provided foreclosure counseling assistance to 430 individuals/families
Completed workout arrangements for 382 individuals/families
Kept 116 individuals/families from losing their homes

Employment

Provided employment services for 651 individuals
Helped 222 secure employment
35 pharmacy technician/retail occupational skills training participants completed training; 9 have been placed in jobs
52 medical administrative professional occupational skills training participants completed training and 19 have been placed in jobs

Education

43 individuals in our GED preparation class were awarded GED diplomas
60 individuals advanced at least one grade level in reading and math
36 GED graduates enrolled in post secondary education
60 parents/caregivers in our Read and Rise children's literacy program learned ways to conduct literacy and pre-reading activities with their children birth to grade 3

Youth

94% of our seniors in the Hartford Public Schools graduated
90% of graduates enrolled in post secondary education
64 individuals were provided with summer or after school Internships opportunities
