Urban
League of Greater Hartford, Inc. is an affiliate of the National Urban League.
Founded in 1910, the National Urban League is a nonprofit, nonpartisan community
based movement headquarters in New York City with 113 professionally staffed
affiliate in 34 states and the District of Columbia.
The mission of the Urban League movement is to enable African Americans
to secure economic self-reliance, parity and power, and civil rights. The
fundamental objective of the National Urban League, and the Urban League
of Greater Hartford is to assist individuals and families achieve self-sufficiency
and to enjoy their rights as equal citizens under the law.
Our three pronged strategy for doing this is:
Ensuring the academic preparation and social
development of children so they are equipped for self-reliance and citizenship
in the 21st Century
Fostering economic self-sufficiency through gainful
employment, entrepreneurship and home ownership
Promoting racial harmony and inclusion so that
opportunities inherent in the structure of American society are open
to all people.
The League carries out its mission at the local, state and national levels
by providing direct services; collaborating with compatible organizations
and by building bridges between all segments of society; conducting research
and policy analysis; engaging in principled advocacy, community mobilization,
social marketing and communications on behalf of those we serve.
The Urban League of Greater Hartford was founded in 1964. The founders were
Rachel Milton, Marion Hepburn Grant, Dr. James S. Peters II, Judge Norris
O'Neill, and Olcott Smith. When founded,the League operated on a $42,000
budget. Since that time, under the strong leadership of our board and staff,
the League has grown to an organization with a 5.5 million dollar budget.
This has allowed us to serve thousands of Greater Hartford residents.
In June of 2001, thanks to the many generous corporate, government, private
foundation and individual donors who gave to the capital campaign, The League
moved into its own headquarters facility at 140 Woodland Street in Hartford.
With the continued support of the many generous corporate, government, private
foundation and individual donors as well as our clients and partners we'll
continue to stay true to our mission.
