The Urban League of Greater Hartford, Inc. is an affiliate of the National Urban League. Founded in 1964 by Rachel Milton, Marion Hepburn Grant, Dr. James S. Peters II, Judge Norris O'Neill and Olcott Smith, the Urban League is a community based not-for-profit. It is one of the largest direct social services agencies in New England. The Urban League provides services in the areas of Education, Employment and Training, and Economic Enrichment.

Our Accomplishments for FY 2009
Educating and Training our Workforce
- 62 individuals in our GED preparation class were awarded GED diplomas ; 21 enrolled in post secondary education or training;
- 70 individuals in our Community Education program advanced at least one grade level in Reading and 62 advanced at least one grade level in math;
- 65 parents/caregivers in our Read and Rise child literacy program learned ways to conduct literacy and pre-reading activities with their children birth to grade 3;
- 30 pharmacy technician/retail occupational skills training participants completed training; 23 completed or are completing internships; 5 have been placed in positions in their fields;
- 26 participants in our medical administrative professionals skills training class completed training and 15 have been placed in positions in their field;
- 337 individuals obtained employment after completing Urban League programs.
Preparing our Youth
- 90 percent of Achievement Center seniors graduated and 84 percent of those were accepted to post secondary education or training. Of the graduates, 1 was the salutatorian; 7 graduated with high honors, 3 were members of National Honor Society.
- The Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Club participated in 3 competitions, placing first for the roller coaster competition in the Connecticut Pre-Engineering Program Day competition, and 8th in the FIRST Tech Challenge.
Enriching our Communities
- 154 families became first time homebuyers resulting in over $20,000,000 in real estate transactions;
- 267 families completed “workouts” to avoid foreclosure and save their homes;
- 252 tax returns were processed at no charge to participants through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. The average filer’s income was $18,737 and 89% qualified for the earned income tax credit. The average combined return was $1,903 and $458,479 was returned to filers.
