Read and Rise Parent Circles
Learn How to Improve Your Children's Early Literacy Skills!!!
On Tuesday, October 7, 2008 we celebrated our 6th anniversary kickoff event. We had representation from the Hartford Public Library and Councilwoman Veronica-Aires Wilson announced the improvement of Hartford Public School’s reading test scores. Parent participant and recruiter, Paula Eastwood, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, and Comcast were recognized for their continuous support. We were then presented with a grant donation by Comcast. Our celebrity guest readers consisted of Senior Assistant State’s Attorney, Sandra Tullius, and youth story teller Andre Keitt. he University of Hartford coaches and student athletes also gave special reading sessions for local youth and children from The Hartford Boys and Girls Club.
The kickoff ended with a reception and book giveaways. As part of the National Urban League’s Campaign for African-American Achievement, the Read and Rise program includes a Parent Circles program to teach parents and caregivers how to engage their children in reading and literacy-building activities and includes distribution of more than 2,000 children’s books, donated by Scholastic, Inc., to area children.
