Today’s health care environment offers opportunities to enter a new career as an allied health care professional. The need in pharmacy for technical support staff has grown significantly.  Opportunities continue to proliferate for pharmacy technicians in various settings from retail to hospitals and home care pharmacy providers.  Pharmacy technicians support the pharmacists lending direct support to the total pharmacy operation.

This program is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in pharmaceutical terminology, filling the medication order, pharmaceutical calculations, pharmacology, pharmacy law, maintaining medication and inventory control systems and administration and management of pharmacy practice.

This is an intensive 10-week (60 hour) program that provides training through lecture discussions and practical problem-solving exercises as well as hands on computer training in pharmacy software.  We also offer internships at CVS and Walgreens and intensive job placement services.  This course is designed to give the student the skills needed to work as a certified pharmacy technician anywhere in the United States and to pass the National Pharmacy Certification test, which is needed to obtain well-paid  positions in major hospitals.

Duties performed by pharmacy technicians can include:

    • Receiving written prescription orders
    • Interpreting the prescription order
    • Dispensing the correct medication
    • Using automated unit dose delivery systems
    • Understanding patient profiles
    • Handling medications and intravenous admixtures and injections
    • Determining the proper storage conditions for a drug
    • Using proprietary drug nomenclature
    • Understanding the Pharmacology of Chemotherapeutic agents
    • Receiving and verifying prescriptions
    • Handling controlled substances
    • Communicating with pharmacists and patients
    • Utilizing computerized inventory, billing, pricing and maintenance of patient records
